Should you stay or should you go? That’s one of the biggest decisions you have to make in terms of a career move. There comes a time wherein you start thinking about changing jobs or staying with your current job. And even if you DO finally decide to leave your company there are so many offers out there and it could get overwhelming.

We get you! Here at Active Connector, every month we interview at least 90 candidates who are looking to switch jobs. We always ask them why they wanna leave their current company. Their answers all boil down to the idea of career growth and whether or not YOU are on track to achieving it within the company you are working at.

What comes in to your mind when I say the words “Career Growth” ?
There aren’t really any standardized rules when it comes to measuring career growth. To each, their own as they say.

The SECRET to achieving CAREER GROWTH is to keep in mind these things:

1.) DON’T FIXATE ON THE SALARY

OKAY, OKAY, It is a little bit about the salary but what we actually meant was that when you do look at deals with job offers within different companies don’t get sucked into it just because of the high salary offer.

We all know that salary is very important and not just to pay the bills, but it also feels like a reward for yourself and the prize for your hard work and career achievements.

There are so many people who come to our office to look for a new job, and they usually say “I want to change my job even if I get a lower salary from now.” Sometimes, people tell us that they want to switch their jobs even if they are getting paid a large salary because they do not feel enough stimulation or growth in the company.

At the end of the day money is still money. Money can’t completely buy off your emotion or compensate the hard time or boredom you are going through at your work. Sure, it is necessary for you to maintain your way of living or lifestyle, but there is more to life than the numbers you see in your bank accounts at the end of the month.

2.) THINK ABOUT THE LEARNING OPPORTUNITY

One thing that is very important is education or the art of consuming continuous knowledge throughout your career in your respective companies. Learning and growing is not limited to the official trainings or programs a company provides. This includes exciting projects you get to be a part of, working and learning directly with CEOs and the ability to create, interact and engage in discussions involving innovative ideas.
It would be fairly understandable that you work for your company because of the stability it provides you. The thing about stability is sometimes it means linear. You go straight and is tasked to keep doing so, and because of the familiarity of the job, position, people you work with it gets comfortable, maybe too comfortable sometimes. You have to identify the importance of self growth within the company. If the company isn’t helping you continuously unlock and achieve your potentials then maybe it’s time to start thinking twice about updating those resumes. It is very important to realize that there is a difference between building your skills and not accumulating new ones.

3.) VALUE YOUR CREATIVE FREEDOM

Another very important aspect in scaling career growth is the environment wherein you are able to fully optimize your skills. Creative freedom, two contradicting words that when put together completely creates an entirely new meaning. Creative-means to be able to produce something new or unique that is of quality, usually within subjected limits or boundaries while Freedom-in general it means having the capability to act without constraint. But when put together, the term creative freedom breathes a whole new perspective, especially in the workplace. Gone are the days where micromanaging is the norm. Innovative and Futuristic companies trust and listen to their employees and believe in their creativity and ability to perform the task expected out of them. This is not limited in terms of the standard technology or programming language and tools used but as well as the the flexibility of the working environment as well. Of course you still have to consider the type of industry you are working at. If it is a very strict industry like banking and finance then it is fairly understandable that they stick to strict and proven frameworks and working environment.

More than any position title a company could offer you, these are some of the things you should consider and bear in mind whenever you are faced with a decision for the next step in your career. You are not your job, but you do dedicate 10 hours of your daily life to it. A company that values their employees see to it that the flexible work environment they design and structure leads to a more engaged and motivated team. It’s a tough world and achieving career growth and fulfillment can be frustrating or very rewarding, but one thing is for sure–IT’S POSSIBLE!
