Jul 4 2019 7 STEPS TO SUCCESSFULLY ACQUIRE A NEW ROLE WITHIN THE SAME COMPANY
When a role or position is no longer challenging and it doesn’t feel like you are growing, maybe it’s time to take the next step. BUT before you start updating your resume and browsing through new jobs, maybe there is a way that you can level up to a new position or role within your company.
Yes! It’s possible to change job roles within a company. It might be a bit difficult but with determination and hardwork, it’s never impossible to achieve this even in Japan. We invited Mr. Seiichi Takeda, IT professional with 10 years of experience, to give us tips and discuss how to move to the next job role successfully. He has been working in Rakuten for around 10 years now and was able to successfully acquire different roles within the company such as e-commerce marketer, developer and data scientist for user targeting, and product manager for reservation app.
He shared with us a step-by-step process of how he successfully acquired a new position within the same company.
1.) GET A GOOD PICTURE OF YOUR TARGET POSITION
You should get a clear understanding of what position you want to take up next. Be mindful of the technical skills needed and the daily tasks to be managed and executed. A very important part of reaching your goal is having a clear understanding of what role you want to take on, what type of responsibilities are attached to this role, and what skills are needed to successfully deliver tasks.
2.) SET A TIME FRAME FOR EACH POSITION
You should set a projected time frame on how long you will should work for your current position. Keep track and give yourself enough time to learn and grow from your current position. Be mindful about achievements within that position and the skills you have acquired along the way. Being aware of how long you have been in the same job position also creates a motivation for you to take more action to move onto the next one.
3.) BUILD A STRONG RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR CURRENT MANAGER
One of the things that is crucial to your career growth and achievements is having a supportive manager. A supportive manager is ideal for all your innovative ideas to be heard and given a chance. Of course it will be up to you to convince them that you are capable and worthy of the opportunity but being in good terms with your manager and having mutual professional understanding goes a long way. If you build a strong relationship with your manager and you got their support, they can recommend and backup your skills and work style. This adds to your credibility and impacts your professional image as well.
4.) BUILD A GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH THE DEPARTMENT YOU WANT TO MOVE TO
Good communication skills really come in handy especially when building your network of connections. Since you will just transfer to a different department or team within the same company, it will be easier for you to build connections for the next role you want to take on. They have a practice in Japan called Nemawashi, it’s a technique wherein you do activities, engagements or interactions with other people so that in the future it will be easier for you to gain consensus or support from the management. It’s building good relationship personally and professionally so that you will have a stronger power of persuasion to get a good number of endorsements for future endeavours.
5.) BUILD EXPERTISE OR SKILLS NEEDED TO YOUR NEXT TARGET POSITION
Good relationship with your manager and the department or team you want to transfer to is not enough. You should be able to do the job and execute tasks successfully. You can utilize free time and attend seminars, read published papers, or practice on your own to build technical skills crucial to take on your next role.
6.) TAKE INITIATIVE IN MANAGING PROJECTS OR SUGGESTING PROJECTS PIVOTAL TO YOUR CAREER MOVE
You should not just passively wait for your manager or anyone to include you on a project or head a project. You should be proactive and take initiative to head on projects or come up with ideas and projects that can be pivotal to your next goal. The success of these projects are crucial in convincing the company that you are capable to take on the next role you are eyeing.
7.) DO NOT FORGET ABOUT THE PEOPLE WHO HELPED YOU ALONG THE WAY
Maintaining good relationships are just as important as creating them. Do not forget about the people who helped you along the way. From colleagues to managers, you should keep in mind that without people who gave their time to listen to your ideas and put their trust to your capabilities, you wouldn’t be able to get to where you are or where you want to be.
Following these 7 steps with a strong motivation and drive will bring you at an arm’s length to the next career role you are aiming for.
