Apr 16 2020 12 TIPS TO NAIL YOUR ONLINE JOB INTERVIEW!
So you finally heard back from that company you applied to weeks ago and they want to schedule an interview with you. That’s great! You are one step closer to achieving your dream job. Most initial interviews are done online via video hosting apps or platforms like Skype. Even if your interview is a video interview and you do not have to come in person, you still have to bring your A game to be able to pass the interview and make a great impression.
Now most people tend to be more relaxed and let their guard down just because they don’t have to come in person for the interview. This shouldn’t be the case. You should prepare the same way you would if you were asked to come in person. Remember being prepared is the ultimate key to confidence!
Here’s a checklist of things that you have to keep in mind before and during your video interview!
1.) DRESS FOR SUCCESS
Yes, you may not have to leave the comfort of your home for this interview but leaving a good first impression whether it’s from the comfort of your bedroom, or at their office, is just as crucial. Just be presentable and look professional to boost your confidence.
2.) MIND YOUR PRIVACY!
You have to let people you are living with know that you have an important job interview coming up and expect total privacy during those hours. You can’t have people walking around on your background with their pajamas on(lucky if they have anything on!) or pets running around freely. If you are living alone, then that’s great because you won’t have to worry about unwanted noice or distraction from your background. Remember to let people know you have an online interview ahead of time.
3.) HAVE GOOD LIGHTING
There are two things to completely avoid: overexposure and dim lighting. Do not do an interview in a poorly lit room. If your room is a little dim, you can place a table lamp behind your laptop and facing your way so that the light hits your face perfectly.
4.) PLAN YOUR BACKGROUND
The Safest bet is to have a plain backdrop. But it would be better if you have a professional looking background at your home like a bookcase or a study shelf. Another tip about your setup is that you should avoid doing the interview in an empty room as this causes sound to echo.
5.) PREPARE BETTER TECHNICAL EQUIPMENT
Sometimes the camera and mic quality of your laptop is not the best especially if the model is a little outdated. If it’s possible, it’s better to connect a digital camera or webcam as well as a mic for better video and audio quality. DO NOT FORGET TO TEST RUN BOTH!
6.) MAINTAIN EYE CONTACT
It’s a little bit more difficult to maintain eye contact during a video interview because you sometimes tend to look at the face of the speaker on the screen or get distracted at your own reflection during the interview. Remember to look at the camera lens and glance to the screen from time to time. Your angle and the scope of the camera is also important. A useful trick is to place the camera at an arm’s length so that you will be in the shot perfectly.
7.) KEEP DISTRACTING THINGS OUT OF YOUR SIGHT
When we get nervous, we unintentionally fidget or play with items within our reach. So remember to keep unnecessary items out of sight. Do not forget to close unnecessary tabs on your browser before your interview begins. Also, avoid using swivel chairs so you do not unconsciously move left and right during the interview.
8.) WATCH YOUR BODY LANGUAGE
Remember to be careful on relaxing too much and ending up slouching. If you have the tendency to slouch when you sit, using a chair without a backrest may help you avoid this. Avoid playing with your hair or touching your face too much. Remember to keep focused and engaged in the conversation.
9.) USE STICKY NOTES FOR REMINDERS
Unlike face to face interviews, you can use your cheat sheets during online interviews as long as you are discreet about it. Take advantage of the fact that you can post reminders for yourself. Post sticky notes on the top right and left corners of your screen. It can be questions you want to ask the company, accomplishments you want to highlight during the interview, or even projects that you are keen to work on if you are accepted in the company. Do not overdo it so you won’t look scripted, overwhelmed and/or confused with your own reminders.
10.) BEWARE OF YOUR WIFI CONNECTION
It would be for the best if you connected your laptop via the ethernet cable so that you will have the best possible internet connection compared to your wifi which can be unreliable at times. If it’s not possible to do so, make sure that your wifi connection is strong to avoid experiencing technical difficulties. Check your internet speed a few minutes before your interview to make sure that you won’t encounter any problems during the interview session.
11.) BE ONLINE 10 MINS BEFORE THE INTERVIEW
Just like a face to face interview, nothing says respect for other people’s time and effort like showing up on time. Since the interview is online, you have to make sure that you won’t experience technical difficulties or that the link provided is working. Try logging in or entering the portal at least 10 minutes for your interview just to make sure that you won’t experience any problem later on.
12.) MAKE SURE THE INTERVIEWER IS ENGAGED
You are already at a disadvantage when it comes creating a vibe of connection since the interview is done over the internet. It is up to you to make sure yo keep the speaker engaged and interested on the conversation. Stop every once in a while to make sure that he/she follows what you are talking about.
There you have it! Those are our 12 tips to nail that online interview. As long as you prepare beforehand, you will feel more confident and at ease during your interview.
